Troppo spesso ignorato dagli stessi romani, il Vittoriano è invece uno dei principali simboli dell’Unità d’Italia. Nato per celebrare re Vittorio Emanuele II (†1878), il monumento venne inaugurato nel 1911.
Ancora oggi porta con sé un giudizio negativo dovuto soprattutto alle tante polemiche sulla distruzione del quartiere medievale preesistente. Le sue sculture e le sue decorazioni, però, raccontano iconograficamente gli ideali risorgimentali che portarono alla nascita dell’Italia, nonché le sue città, regioni e mari, attraverso uno “stile nazionale” aggiornato sulle tendenze artistiche del secondo Ottocento francese e della più moderna Secessione viennese. Dalle sue terrazze è possibile ammirare l’intera città.

Too often little known by the Romans themselves, the Vittoriano is instead one of the main symbols of the Unification of Italy. Built to celebrate King Victor Emmanuel II († 1878), the monument was inaugurated in 1911.
Even today it carries with it a negative judgment due above all to the many controversies about the destruction of the pre-existing medieval quarter. His sculptures and decorations, however, tell iconographically the Risorgimento ideals that led to the birth of Italy, as well as its cities, regions and seas, by a “national style” updated on the artistic tendencies of the second half of the nineteenth century and the most modern Viennese Secession.
From its terraces it is possible to see the whole city.
